Questions and answers
What is the Deaf-Care Healthcare Initiative (DCHI)?
DCHI is a national healthcare, technology, and social justice initiative that eliminates communication barriers in healthcare for Deaf and Hard of Hearing people across South Africa — by integrating South African Sign Language (SASL), digital health tools, and institutional partnerships.
Who does DCHI help?
Deaf and Hard of Hearing patients, healthcare professionals and facilities, SASL interpreters, and partner organisations and government departments working toward accessible care.
Why does South African Sign Language (SASL) matter in healthcare?
SASL is the first language of many Deaf South Africans and is now an official language. Without it, communication failures in healthcare lead to misdiagnosis, delayed treatment, and eroded trust. DCHI places SASL at the centre of safe, dignified clinical communication.
How can a Deaf or Hard of Hearing patient access an interpreter?
Contact DCHI by phone or WhatsApp on +27 76 574 4060 or email info@deafcarehealthcare.org. DCHI offers on-demand and scheduled SASL interpreting, both in person and remotely.
Can hospitals, clinics, or government departments partner with DCHI?
Yes. DCHI partners with institutions to embed accessibility into healthcare systems through accessibility assessments, SASL integration planning, policy and protocol development, interpreter services, and pilot programmes. Get in touch to start a conversation.
How can I support or donate to DCHI?
You can make a donation, partner with us, or volunteer your skills as an interpreter, clinician, or professional. Visit the Donate page or email info@deafcarehealthcare.org.
Is DCHI a registered organisation?
DCHI operates as a Non-Profit Company (NPC) and is anchored through partnership with the Albert & Nokukhanya Luthuli Peace & Development Institute and its 10-year social justice strategic agenda.
How is my personal and health information protected?
DCHI is committed to transparent governance and ethical data practices, and handles personal information in line with South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). See our Privacy Policy for details.
