Who we are

The Deaf-Care Healthcare Initiative (DCHI) is a Non-Profit Company (NPC) registered in South Africa. This policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal information when you interact with us, including through this website.

Information we collect

We only collect personal information that you choose to provide or that is necessary to deliver our services. This may include:

  • Contact details such as your name, email address, and phone number.
  • The content of enquiries, registrations, or messages you send us.
  • Information needed to arrange SASL interpreting or related services.
  • Basic technical information (such as browser type) collected by standard web logs.

How we use your information

We use your personal information to:

  • Respond to your enquiries and requests.
  • Arrange and deliver interpreting, training, and related services.
  • Process and acknowledge donations and partnership requests.
  • Communicate updates you have asked to receive.
  • Meet our legal, governance, and reporting obligations.

Lawful basis

We process personal information on the basis of your consent, to fulfil a request or service you have asked for, to comply with legal obligations, or for DCHI's legitimate interests in delivering its mission — always in a manner consistent with POPIA.

Sharing your information

We do not sell your personal information. We only share it where necessary — for example, with interpreters or healthcare partners involved in a service you have requested, or with service providers who help us operate (such as email or form-handling tools), under appropriate confidentiality and data-protection terms. We may also disclose information where required by law.

Health and sensitive information

Where we handle special personal information (such as information relating to health or disability) it is treated with heightened care, used only for the purpose for which it was provided, and accessed only by those who need it to deliver the service.

Data security and retention

We apply reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect personal information against loss, misuse, and unauthorised access. We keep personal information only for as long as necessary to fulfil the purposes described above or as required by law, after which it is securely deleted or anonymised.

Your rights under POPIA

You have the right to:

  • Access the personal information we hold about you.
  • Request correction or deletion of your information.
  • Object to or withdraw consent for certain processing.
  • Lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator of South Africa.
